About me / Vita
If you ask any artist, one may find it difficult to pin down their art practice completely as art evolves, shifts, changes until it is a manifestation of memoirs and ties with an individual's own living history. My own art could best be described as an ongoing painting series held up by the inner world of my own sub-conscious. In dreams, I escape to a world that is reflective of my own reality in part, but distorted by underlying fears and desires. The majority of my ideas emerge from spontaneity. Once I have a minds' vision I work hurriedly to reach the image in black and white through use of a mechanical pencil. Usually the sketch that is produced is true to the visualization but sometimes I begin configuring as to what will make the best composition so it is dynamic. Once I am happy, my idea comes into fruition in the medium of oil paint. Each piece tends to end up being a surreal warped view of my own reality My style originates from my study of surrealism when I was 14. At the time I was listening to heavy metal, I was into skateboard culture and I was drawn to anything out of the ordinary. Landscapes were not quite my thing, I grew up in Cwmbran so I was surrounded by a panoramic view of the Welsh valleys. I just didn't want any more of the same. At that rebellious age, my instinct was to follow whatever embraced escapism from reality and surrealism was just that to me. I read much of what Salvador Dali wrote in Diary of a Genius and I listened to music by Marilyn Manson. Both these things opened up my mind to seeking irrational thoughts and keeping them rather than discarding them. I had a difficult time in art school as I rebelled a lot in response to what was said about my style which was heavily inspired by Mark Ryden, Robert Williams and Todd Schorr. At times I felt like I was being moulded into a box. I was told that I was not producing high art so I identified with artists that are seen outside of this category. With a great sense of intrigue gravitating towards the sub-conscious realm, Kate creates surreal works, reflective of her perception of Reality. Frequently referencing pop-culture and social issues of today, her narrative paintings fabricate a parallel universe where impossibilities prevail. Kate currently exhibits in Wales and London and accepts commissions worldwide.
